Senator Shelby is a graduate of the Uiversity of Alabama having earned his undergraduate degree in 1957 and his Juris Doctor in 1963.  He began his legislative career in the Alabama State Senate (1971-1979).  Shelby became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and served from 1979-1987.  Senator Shelby was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986 and where he is now the Senior Senator and the Ranking Member on the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs.
