Senator Conrad did his undergraduate work at Stanford University and received his MBA from The George Washington University. After graduation, he worked as the assistant to the North Dakota Tax Commissioner and succeeded him in 1980. He served as the Tax Commissioner of North Dakota from 1981-1987. Senator Conrad assumed his U.S. Senate seat in 1987, where he serves as the Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee. He has announced his retirement and is not a candidate in 2012.
